Short MM for Sore Throat & Tonsillitis
Following the Short Tonsillitis Repertory this page contains short description of the main remedies included there. Other sore throat remedies can be found in the Short Rhinitis MM as well as in this article about homeopathic treatment os sore throat.
Sepia is a chronic remedy and the problems with throat usually arise as an aftereffect from anger. Other causative factor is wetting hands and with cold water, breathing snowy air; children who take cold whenever weather changes.
The characteristic sensations in the throat are dryness and tightness. In the region of tonsils there is tightness, as if neck-cloth was pressed too tight. Sensation as if there was a plug into throat. Pains are stinging and stitching pains, worse on swallowing. Swallowing is difficult; the throat gets contracted and constricted on swallowing.
When telling about their symptoms, patients involuntary weep.
With soreness of throat there is swelling of cervical lymphatic glands. Tonsils are swollen, inflamed, suppurating. In throat and soft palate there is accumulation of mucus which is hawked in the morning.
Causticum has action on respiration and muscles of larynx. Patient is sensitive to both cold and warmth, weak, with sore and raw pains in respiratory paths, especially larynx. In larynx accumulates mucus. Throat catarrh extends to Eustachian tubes. Patients hear noises and reverberation in ears.
Throat pains of Causticum are rarely due to acute disease. Causticum is chronic remedy for aftereffects from long standing grief and suppressed eruptions. Throat gets sore after exertion from using. Pains are lacerating, excoriating, scraping, burning. The throat feels rough.
On swallowing there are shooting pains and audible cracking in the throat. Patients feel constant desire to swallow, and like Sepia, throat feels constricted or swollen. However in Causticum patients the difficult swallowing is due to paralysis of the organs of deglutition, not due to acute catarrh of the mucous membranes.
Causticum also has dryness in throat without thirst.
Dulcamara picture arises in time when weather is cold and damp. Any ill effects from wetting from rain or snow, lying on damp ground, or staying in cold basements may lead to throat inflammation with pressing pain. Uvula is felt as if elongated, the saliva gets very tough. Fauces are raw, and there is much thirst. Tongue is dry and covered with thick coating; it might be swollen, and that affects the speech. It becomes indistinct, as in drunkards. In spite of that, patients speak all the time.
Dulcamara is one of the first remedies for flu.
Rapid start of acute diseases, with high fever and indistinct symptoms; pale face with red circles on the cheeks; and usual causation of the acute is suppressed perspiration.
Patients are very talkative, excited. There is a very strong headache. Throat pains start in the morning, throat feels swollen, stiff. Pain gets worse on swallowing of saliva, and there is a feeling of a lump on the right side of throat. Palate, tonsils and pharynx are dry, red and painful; great thirst for cold water (Phos).
Terrible restlessness; stiffness of lower jaw which extends to throat and tongue and impedes speech; constriction in throat. Throat is red, polished, swollen, varnished; looks as if was stung. Uvula is elongated and swollen. There is dryness and great thirst. Throat could have ulcers on it, or a coating; or a watery blisters on the back side. Very painful, with difficulty in swallowing and constricted breathing. There is sensation as if something pointed is stuck in throat.
This remedy has profound action and is used in chronic cases, and also in cases where too many remedies were given and thus an oversensitive state of patient had been produced.
From mouth there is putrid smell. Tongue is excoriated, with white, yellow or green coating. There are ulcers on fauces with stitching pains. Same ulcers may be found on the internal sides of the cheeks, corners or mouth, tongue. Salivation is increased (as in Merc and Bar-c). Mouth feels very dry, with burning thirst.
Throat is ulcerated, inflamed, with shooting pains, burning and soreness. Pains are worse on swallowing liquids. Tonsils, uvula and fauces are red and swollen. Throat is very dry with burning sensation as of excoriation. Tonsils and fauces could be covered with white patches.
This remedy has great action on mucous membranes in mouth and gums. As in Sepia, the pathology of Staphysagria is usually caused by anger, but suppressed; and in most cases suppressed anger is mixed with indignation.
There are many vesicles in mouth and on the tongue. Possibly the gums are bleeding often, and are withdrawing from teeth (as chronic state). There are ulcers on the membranes of mouth, excrescences on the internal side of the cheeks, increased saliva. Tongue is coated in white and is very dry. There is thick mucus at the backside of tongue and it stops the posterior passages down to the throat.
Throat is dry and scraped, excoriated, worse on speaking and swallowing. There is a tendency to frequent deglutition when speaking.
When tonsils are affected, the pain on swallowing is stitching and goes into the ear like a prick (most cases in left ear). Tonsils are swollen (like Merc) and pain is worse from external touching of neck (which happens on medical examination).
Secretions of Pulsatilla are yellowish-green, mild and thick; but are easy to blow up. So are these patients: usually women and children, mild, weepy, prone to manipulative actions in order to draw attention of others – boyfriends, husbands, parents, partners etc.
One sure sign that indicates Pulsatilla is the alternation of symptoms and places. Pains of Pulsatilla are shifting from one part from another; symptoms ever changing; there are no two colds alike. Nose obstruction affects one nostril, then the other, then changes backwards.
Patient is thirstless (though the mouth may be dry), very chilly, yet craves for fresh, open air, and wants to go outside or at least to open the window. Pains in throat are excoriating, raw, scraping, burning, smarting. Throat and uvula are red with sensation were swollen which becomes worse on swallowing.
Swallowing is difficult, throat is constricted. The inflammation manifests by redness and varicose swelling of veins in throat.
The sore throat is generally worse in evening or afternoon.
Pathology of this remedy is developed from wetting the head, over exertion, cold damp weather and anger.
Mouth is dry and patients are thirsty. In the mornings they feel in their mouth salty taste on tongue; mouth full of salty mucus, salty saliva (salivation is increased). The tongue discoloration is characteristic: tongue is dry, red or brownish, and cracked; the tip is triangular and red; the coating is at the root or on one side, yellowish-white.
Throat is also dry, sore. Pain is bruised, throat is swollen. Swallowing of solid food is impeded due to constriction of esophagus. Talking aggravates; therefore such condition may arise in public speakers – teachers, coaches etc.
In the morning there is much hawking of mucus accumulated in throat through the night.
Reason for pathology of Phosphorus to arise could be strong emotions and external influences. People prone to this remedy are highly impressionable by external stimuli. So usually throat conditions for Phosphorus are met in chronic cases, as acute manifestation of a chronic disease.
Throat is dry day and night. Phosphorus is extremely thirsty remedy, for large quantities cold water; at the same time drinking of cold water aggravates the stomach right after it gets warm in it.
Pains in throat are burning, smarting, scraping, excoriated.
Extremely chilly remedy with strong desire for fresh air at the same time. Patient wants to be fanned. Mouth is dry but patient is not thirsty. Mucous membranes in mouth are rough. Tongue is excoriated.
Throat is swollen and sore, with constricted sensation and difficult swallowing. Pains are smarting and scraping, and burning; they affect pharynx, palate and gullet. Much mucus accumulates in throat, easily hawked up. Uvula is inflamed and swollen.
Carbo vegetabilis pathology arises after contaminated or fat food, alcohol, poultry. Overheating, overexertion, lifting of heavy loads also may lead to acute disease. Usually such develops when weather changes to damp and warm.
Dr Stapf notes that Sabadilla is ‘specific to a certain kind of bad angina’. Symptoms of Saabadilla are periodical and paroxysmal. Remedy is suited to old chronic throat inflammation with marked aggravation from cold air and desire for hot drink.
Fright and mental exertion are usual prodromes for Sabadilla’s pathology.
Mouth and tongue are as if burnt. On the tongue there are blisters. The tip of tongue is sore and bluish.
In throat there is a sensation of a plug which impedes the swallowing. Patient is constantly trying to swallow, in spite of the pain in mouth and behind larynx as if something lodged there. Constant hawking in attempt to evacuate that thing as well as the thick mucus in throat. There might be sensation of a skin hanging loosely in throat which must be swallowed.
Warm food is swallowed more easily, though the throat is sore, dry, rough and scraping. Uvula is inflamed.
