Cistus canadensis | Chronic Pharyngitis & Hard Glands

This article observes the little homeopathic remedy Cistus canadensis, which is valuable in the homeopathic treatment of upper respiratory infections and indurations of glands. Further on, the article includes the pattern of the Bach flower remedy Rock Rose; for both homeopathic and Bach flower remedies were prepared by the same plant.

Cistus is small but important remedy with affinity to lymphatic tissues of the naso-pharynx, neck and throat. It cures chronic hard swellings of the cervical glands, herpetic eruptions on the skin, and indurations of the breasts. The remedy is valuable in the treatment of malignant glandular tumors on the neck and of the breast; also in suppurations of glands.

Causation & Main Characteristics

Vexation and all types of mental excitement are found to be the exciting cause for pathology of Cistus. According to W. Boericke, Cistus is a deep-acting anti-psoric remedy with marked sensitiveness to cold.

The slightest exposure to cold air may give rise to acute pharyngitis; actually this affection is most common for the people who need Cistus. Where people often experience nervous excitement and fits of anger, and are feeling worse after mental work, together with frequent acute infections of the upper respiratory tract, the homeopaths have to bear in mind this remedy.

The initial Cistus pathology stage is characterized by conditions of acute pharyngitis, swollen tonsils, and suppuration of tonsils. Later the disease goes down to the trachea, which may be felt narrow (Boericke), and may affect the lungs. The respiration is impeded on lying down, accompanied by itching in trachea and grasping for air.

The cold aggravates the patient gravely. They have feeling of coldness in the throat and in the abdomen; their breath is cold.

During the course of treatment the patients shouldn’t drink coffee, for Cistus is incompatible with it, coffee causes a diarrhea. Diarrhea is caused also by fruits.

All Cistus patients have strong desire for cheese.

The remedy is very similar to Calcarea carbonica, and is compatible with the remedies from Magnesium group, Carbo vegetabilis and Phosphorus.

Symptoms of Sore Throat | Tonsillitis & Pharyngitis

The inspiration of cold air causes pain. The throat is felt hot, extremely dry and swollen – so swollen that it is felt ‘spongy’; and the patients frequently swallow gulps of water and saliva to relieve that feeling. It is possible that they feel the dryness on a little spot of the throat (like Lachesis and Kalium bichromicum). The tonsils are also swollen, and so is the uvula; as a complication the tonsils may suppurate. There is constantly mucus gathering in the throat, which causes desire for hawking it all the time. All pains in the throat are stitching.

There is feeling of coldness of the tongue, of the breath and of the entire throat. The breath is putrid and offensive. The patients refuse to protrude their tongue for this movement causes great pain.

Usually the pharyngitis and tonsillitis are accompanied by hard swelling of the glands of parotid glands; and of the glands on one or both sides of the neck. And almost every disease goes together with a herpes simplex on the face.

When these acute inflammations are not addressed by a holistic treatment, the patients may develop chronic pharyngitis. Usually the parents are advised to have the tonsils of the child removed by a surgeon. Later on, however, the pathology advances towards the glands, where the affections go to a deeper level.

Rock Rose

Rock Rose

Bach’s Helianthemum nummularium

The Rock Rose is one of the ingredients of Bach’s Rescue Remedy tincture. It is an essence for emergencies and utter circumstances; because of that it is named Bach’s Arnica.

The people who have weak nervous system and limited spirits are more prone to develop condition of Rock Rose. Therefore the sudden danger and unexpected extreme situations reflect on them stronger than in other individuals. More frequently Rock Rose conditions arise in children; but also in intellectual individuals whose work is mainly in the mental sphere.

The symptoms are marked: feeling of terror, panic, despair, tremendous horror. Cannot speak, doesn’t see or hear anything; the individual is in shock; palpitations of heart and cold perspiration of palms of hands. The solar plexus is hard and painful; each fear is felt in the abdomen.

According to some authors, amongst the ancestors of people who frequently need Helianthemum there were alcoholics.
