Teething is difficult period with many accompanying health issues. Babies are anxious, irritable, crying without visible reason. It is really difficult to estimate why babies cry, especially when everybody knows about colic problems, which start soon after birth and may continue from one to several months.
Diseases during Dentition
Very often the colic problem manifests together with the early teething and symptoms are mixing together.
Knowing the real reason for baby’s indisposition is the essence of the case. Constitutional signs should be assessed separately from the ill symptoms. Thus we treat the disease without interfering with child’s natural development.
Applying Homeopathy to children helps them to easily adapt to outer environment, to grow up with confidence and to learn in a smooth way how to face their challenges.
Teeth cutting could be very painful or may pass without problems. Lately most of the infants do suffer during dentition. They develop physical complaints – coryza, excessive salivation, diarrhea, indigestion, constipation, intense fever.
On mental level there is increased irritability, desire to be carried, caressed, rocked; sleep disturbances, like aversion to be put in bed or frequent waking; shrieking and throwing things, constant crying. Babies often put everything in mouth, rubbing the gums, and sometimes we observe a tendency to bite. In some babies first teeth cut too early or too slow.
Remedies described bellow cover screaming as the most intrusive symptom of the children.
Calc-p. is very important remedy for teeth, bones, head and nutrition.
The teeth grow slowly and first tooth cut late, after 7th month. The baby is thin and looks emaciated. Calc-p. is very probable when the fontanelles remain open long after 1 year and there is doubt for rachitis. You will also notice that teeth decay rapidly, short after they appear.
Often concomitant symptom of dentition is the diarrhea. The faeces are hot, contain indigested food and smell awful. The child aggravates fast from the loss of fluids.
Babies are very uneasy, capricious, discontented, irritable, changable. They scream in the night.
As a rule, the food is not assimilated. Babies ether have intolerance of milk or want to be put on the breast all the time. They are very hungry but food assimilation is bad. They aggravate in cold air, from cold wet weather. The child is thin, brittle, the hands and feet are cold.
All the symptoms grow worse during the teething period. Calc-p is very important remedy during dentition and if you give regularly (each month) a doze of the remedy in low potency – 6 or 9 C, you will probably prevent most of the aggravations.
This remedy also has marked aggravation from teething, but it differs from Calc-p in very clear way. These children are very sensitive, very mild and emotional. Even the youngest babies express emotions in unique way: They may be soothed not just when carried but want to be fondled, to be caressed, kissed, nursed at the same time. Soon after they are able to such actions, mother will be amazed by the way they are capable of showing their love to her.
Sometimes even very young children may cry from music.
Infants cry constantly during dentition period – the entire period of growing and cutting of teeth, which could last several months. Babies toss and utter piercing screams at night during sleep. They can become angry, willful and obstinate to intolerable extent. And at the same time they really require tenderness and loving touch from their parents. Very sensitive and longing for their parents love, babies begin to cry mournfully when the parents reach the limits of their patience and address them with raised voice or changed tone of speaking.
However young the child is, the outlook of its face may be wrinkled like the face of an old man.
At physical level babies really suffer from extreme pain. The gums are soft, spongy, dark red or blue. Gums become very painful. From the moment teeth erupt, they show signs of decay. Indigestion is also present in this remedy; babies may suffer either from constipation or from diarrhea with undigested stools during the entire period of teething.
Kreos. is deep acting remedy with profound action on digestive tract, gums and teeth. The frequency of its taking should follow the degree of amelioration – when the baby shows signs of soothing, it should not receive new doze of Kreos., till the next crisis. Remedy action lasts at least 20 days.
Close to Kreosotum is
In cases where the baby looks exhausted, the tongue is dry, there are aphthae in the mouth. The baby cries when you touch its gums. Tereb also manifests much tossing at night and screaming with pain but the emotional characteristics of Kreosotum, as described above, are not present.
It is the most widely known remedy for difficult teething, even from non-specialists; and is unfortunately widely prescribed for difficult dentition. It not always has the aimed effect.
Cham has its place in cases of ailments during dentition, when symptoms are clearly pointing exactly to this remedy; but not every child who is very cross and requires carrying needs Chamomilla.
Chamomilla neither has the deep action of Calcarea phosphorica on bones and mental development of children, nor the marked emotional characteristics and physical symptoms of Kreosotum. Slow appearance of teeth is not present, neither is the deep dissatisfaction of Calc-p. or the emotional vulnerability of Kreos.; the babies are just angry – and they may become angry from just anything. They are very sensitive and nervous, and thus predisposed to convulsions.
Cham. will help when the temperature is rising unexpectedly, one cheek of the child is red and the other is pale and possibly there is dry hacking cough. Together with the temperature, child is very irritable and screams a lot during the day, throwing its toys. Baby cries, and demands angrily something from its parents; but when receiving it, throws it away.
The child starts and jumps much during sleep. It is very cross and wants to be carried; but the carrying must have intensive, rocking manner; and this alone pacifies. The moment you left the baby, it started to cry immediately. And this cry is angry.
Cham is oversensitive to the slightest pain. So there is another difference with Kreosotum, where babies suffer from realy intensive pain while with Chamomila we face simply intolerance to least pain.
Often diarrhea is present, with watery, slimy, offensive green excrements; having consistency like chopped eggs. The gums are red and sensitive.
In general Cham works well in lesser cases of dentition; the remedy acts fast but lasts shortly. It acts better in high potencies – above 30 C, and the best above 200 C.
