Terebinthinae oleum is one of the most important remedies when it comes to urinary inflammations; but especially this remedy has affinity to the kidneys. The pains are dull, kidneys are felt swollen, the urine is diminished, contains albumen, looks smoky and smells of violets. There is violent burning and drawing pain in kidneys, bladder and urethra. Patients feel pressure in kidneys when sitting, relieved by motion. The entire body is felt stiff; there is heaviness in the renal region. Nephritis developed after scarlet fever, early stage. The tongue is red and looks glossy.
Berberis vulgaris is typical remedy for various urinary infections. Patients feel soreness in lumbar region and kidneys area. They can’t stand pressure, shaking and hard stepping: the pains become intolerable. There is violent burning and stitching pain in the kidneys and loins. It is a remedy for renal stones, which are formed in the kidneys and move down through ureter; hence the pains extend from the kidneys through the ureters, downward to the bladder. The pains are also described as radiating, from kidneys to the entire area of the sacrum and back up from the waist. This is the main point for distinguishing Berberis from the other urinary remedies.
Mercurius corrosivus is characterized by intense tenesmus of the bladder, accompanied by intense burning. The urine is either suppressed or hot, painfully passed on drops (Canth.); burning and bloody, contains filaments or pieces of flesh (which are in fact mucus); urine contains albumen. Arsenicum album is presented in nephritis with stitching pains in the area of the kidneys, worse on taking deep breath and in sneezing. Abscess (suppuration) of kidneys. Scarlatinum is nosode, used in nephritis developed after the homonymous disease. Same is the
Streptococcinum. Both remedies are used intercurrently after scarlet fever or acute tonsillitis.
