Major Homeopathic Remedies for Fear | Part Three

Fear and Grief | Causticum, Graphites, Ignatia amara

This article continues the previous two by presenting the next most important homeopathic remedies in which pathogenesis exists fear as an underlying cause for sickness.

Causticum | Hahnemann’s “Tincture acris sine Kali”

This remedy being one of the greatest remedies for chronic anxiety and fear, was first prepared by Samuel Hahnemann and described in the third volume of his book ‘Chronic Diseases’ in 1830, under the description ‘The Caustic Substance’.

The basic substance for the preparation of the homeopathic remedy was obtained by distilling a mixture of slaked lime and a spirit tincture of previously burnt potassium bisulphate. It had still not come to light today, how Hahnemann reached to the idea about this remedy.

This makes Causticum one of the very few homeopathic remedies prepared by a substance which is not met in nature as it is. As we all know, the vast majority of homeopathic remedies were made by natural sources taken from the mineral, vegetable and animal kingdoms.

Causticum is quite characteristic constitutional type; and when met once, it can’t be mistaken. These people have strong feeling for social fairness and justice. They can’t endure anything and anyone who suppress them or their friends. Their remarkable sensitivity to any type of social suppressors, together with the extreme oversensitivity of the nervous system is the key to the need of Causticum. This combination gives rise to their problem with the authorities – in time this problem may gain nature of anarchism.

Causation: burns or scalds, fright, prolonged grief, night-watching, suppressed eruptions.

Another important note to remember about Causticum is the great weakness of the nervous and muscular-skeletal system on physical level; this weakness is increasing gradually and unnoticeably, and may reach point of paralysis of single organs and parts. However this pathology advances really slowly over time, unnoticeably for the patient.
The remedy has affinity to the nerves, the sensorium, muscles and bones, bladder and larynx; people tend to develop colds, often accompanied by losing voice; they grow nervous, anxious and apprehensive when the twilight is approaching – it is just the time when the light goes down.

Fear Related Symptoms

Causticum is one of the most anxious remedies in the entire Materia Medica. This anxiety is about their friends and relatives and about the future; the individual fears that something terrible will happen to him.

Like the physical pathology, also the fears of Causticum are developed slowly. People fear of the dark and of being alone at night. They are anxious about their future in the evening, especially on going to sleep; they are full of cares about others. They fear accidents may happen to them and to their relatives; fear of impending danger, of evil, of death.

Very strong fear they have that something will happen. This drives them crazy, and they cannot go out from home without going back through the door many times to check whether they turned off all appliances.
