Short Materia Medica for Rhinitis

Sabadilla

Violent (sometimes abortive) sneezing, accompanied by lacrymation and redness of eyelids. Often coryza is attended by headache so strong that stupefies the patient.

Sabadilla is remedy suited for children who have warms; nervous children with relaxed muscles. The remedy affects mucous membranes of anus and nose, the lachrymal glands and the nerves. Patients are worse from cold. Complaints return periodically at same hour, and at full or new moon.

Nose is itching, alternating with itching and crawling sensation in anus. The child rubs and picks the nose constantly. Mucous membranes are very dry. The itching and tingling in nose spreads over the soft palate and the whole body.

Silicea terra

Silicea is chronic remedy. It has profound action on the entire organism, with affinity to nutrition, connective tissues, nerves, skin, ears and mucous membranes. Very chilly, sensitive to cold air, draft, damp and bathing, uncovering, suppressed perspiration of feet. In cold affections wrapping of head always ameliorated all complaints. People who need Silicea are flabby, chilly, and suffer from lack of stamina.

The nose affections of Silicea are deep and repeating, somehow always related to ears. Nose discharges are frothy. Hearing is affected, ears are stopped. Sinuses get inflamed, glands around ears become swollen and painful.

Frequent ineffectual attempts to sneeze; fluent secretion at one day, and dry coryza at another. Complete obstruction of nose, even speaking is impeded due to the need for breathing through the mouth.

Sticta pulmonaria

Sticta affects the mucous membranes of nose, bronchi, chest and joints. Usually the acute rhinitis is quickly followed by catarrhal inflammation of bronchi, and preceded by rheumatic affections of the joints.

The picture of Sticta may be found in the separate article about this remedy.

Sulphur

Great remedy with continually relapsing complaints, impossible standing posture of the body, sensation of burning and dryness of mucous membranes, almost everywhere in the body, and redness and excoriation of all bodily orifices because of the discharges which are acrid, burning and excoriating.

Sulphur is again chronic remedy, and in acute conditions is rarely prescribed at the beginning. There are however cases where Sulphur is indicated as initial acute remedy.

The nose is inflamed, with swollen wings, with shining red tip; very frequent sneezing in the evening and morning and blowing from the nose of mucus mixed with blood. The sneezing comes in fits after rising from bed in rapid and severe succession. There is sensation as if cold is coming even before it’s appeared.

Sulphur is often indicated as concluding remedy in acute conditions, especially in children cases. It is given after the acute remedy, where there are some symptoms left which were not influenced in the course of cure. The acute remedies of Sulphur are Aconitum, Bryonia; it follows well after Pulsatilla, Lycopodium, Sepia.

Thuja occidentalis

Thuja is important remedy with long and deep action in chronic complaints. It is indicated in acute cases developed after vaccinations; not very often prescribed in cases of acute rhinitis.

Violent sudden coryza, occurring at night, disturbing sleep; with purulent secretion – yellow or green, smelling bad; sore nostrils, somewhat ulcerated; accompanied by hoarseness and painful throat, dry cough. When blowing out the nose the discharge seem to come out from frontal sinuses; it is increased, purulent, offensive, partly liquid, partly thick, greenish and even blackish or bloody. Patients feel as if their nose is dry, stopped in the upper part, pressed at the root; with dullness of smell.
