The Constitution in Homeopathy | How to Use It When Prescribing

The ability of the prescriber to notify those characteristics in his patient, which outline the miasm, the constitution, and the current active disease, is of utmost importance in the homeopathic case-taking.
One of the headstones in the homeopathic treatment is the determination of individual’s constitution. Constitution always matters in homeopathic prescription, even if the respective case has been treated from etiological, isopathical, miasmatical or pathological angle for identifying the right remedy. By knowing the patient’s constitution homeopaths have a basement for making a prognosis of the case development as well as for the further homeopathic remedies that might next be needed by the patient; that is especially valid in chronic cases.

This article dwells on the main types of bodily constitution and the respective groups of homeopathic remedies which are prone to act beneficially and curatively.

How to Understand Constitution

The bodily constitution is a complex of anatomical, physiological and general characteristics of an individual. The structure of the human body is universal for all human beings, there is no doubt of that; however some people have more massive bone system than others, more vital heat than others, more flesh than others; and there are differences between people with regards to the inclination to grow bodily mass, the food preferences, the casual thirst, the tolerance to humid, dry, cold or hot weather etc. All these peculiarities in a person form this individual’s constitution.

A healthy and robust constitution is one of the premises for an individual to be capable to resist when whether turns, or when is exposed to hardship, dry frost, heavy rains, sweltering heat; when disagreeable circumstances occur, close friends or family members pass on or a position, or a job, is lost.

According to excess or deficiency of certain elements and compounds in blood and tissues the healthy constitution becomes compromised. In 1870 Dr. E. von Grauvogl, a contemporarian of Hahnemann, introduces to Homeopathy three main groups of morbid bodily constitutions. Short descriptions of those groups are shown in the next sections of this article; the accent is placed on the specific respond of each constitutional type to a disease.

The Hydrogenoid Constitution

The hydrogenoid constitution is characterized by excess of the element hydrogen, which consequently forms an excess of water in the tissues and organs of the body, and particularly in the blood.

These are the people who cannot tolerate rain, dampness and cold. When they are sick, their symptoms aggravate even by living nearby standing waters and by taking baths. The foggy weather makes them feel so poorly, not so physically but emotionally also, so that suicidal thoughts could appear. Their diseases are getting worse from eating animal food, sour milk, cooled drinks, hard boiled eggs, cucumbers, mushrooms.

Their diseases are periodical. The nervous system is most affected by the excess of water. The periods of aggravation and remission follow one another in shorter and longer periods of time. One typical remedy for hydrogenoid constitution is Natrium sulphuricum; another is China.

The people with hydrogenoid constitution usually suffer from the sycotic miasm. Hence the anti-sycotic remedies will be most beneficial for patients’ chronic diseases. Here follows list of some homeopathic remedies for hydrogenoid constitution:

From the mineral kingdom:

Calcarea carbonica, Magnesium carbonicum, Magnesium phosphoricum, Silicea, Iodium, Bromium, the muriatics, all Natrums including Borax, Nitricum acidum, Alumina, the antimoniums;

From the plant kingdom:

Thuja, Arnica, Pulsatilla, Ipecacuanna, Conium, China;

From the animal kingdom:

Apis, Aranea diadematus;

From the Carbon group:

Carboneum animalis and vegetabilis.

The Oxygenoid Constitution

All biochemical processes in human organism are directed towards assimilation of the food taken, and reformation it into energy. The oxygen takes part in the most important biochemical cycles, from which energy is produced. Under certain conditions the excess of the element oxygen and the increased influence of the oxygen on the body predispose the formation and manifestations of morbid oxygenoid constitution.

These manifestations in an individual we recognize by the increased desire for fat and oxydable foods, aversion to animal food, desire for carbohydrates. These are the people who know the weather is going to change long before it actually does; and this change is from dry to wet. They become mentally uneasy before thunderstorms, rain or snow; and everyone knows that these moments are characterized by an increased quantity of ozone in the air; which for healthy people is quite beneficial.

So it is the change in the atmosphere which makes them suffer, and not the dampness itself, like it is with the hydrogenoid type. When the rain or the snow starts to fall, or in foggy weather, the oxygenoid types feel better and all their symptoms are alleviated.

The patients with oxygenoid constitution are prone to develop syphilitic miasmatic diseases. Among the remedies indicated for oxygenoid constitution are:

From the mineral kingdom:

Ferrum, Phosphorus, Sulphur, Copper, Hepar, Sulphuricum acidum, Mercurius remedies, Aurums, Argentums, Platinum metallicum, Arsenicum, Kalium bichromicum.

From the plant kingdom:

Rhus toxicodendron, Dulcamara, Chamomilla, Lycopodium, Belladonna, Nux vomica, Digitalis, Hyosciamus, Opium, Laurocerasus, Camphora.

From the Carbon Group:

Graphites, Petroleum, Kreosotum, Terebinthinae oleum, Benzoic acid.
